Beta Endorphin is an endogenous neuropeptide which acts as an agonist for opioid receptors. It binds strongly to μ receptors in brain and by μ and κ receptors in the spinal cord and is released in response to painful stimuli and is studied for its effects on pain perception (nociception). It is found in the hypothalmus and pituitary gland and is formed by cleavage of the C-terminal region of β-lipotropin. N-Acetyl Beta Endorphin does not have opiate activity.
