Triton? X-100 is a non-ionic surfactant and which is often used in biochemical applications to lyse cells and solubilize protein aggregates. It is generally considered to be a mild detergent that doesn’t denature proteins. It may also be used as a parting agent to facilitate removal of gels from tube walls. Triton? X-100 is seeing growing use in the field of transfection as a means to render live cell membranes permeable.
Applications:
Facilitate transfection by permeablizing live cell membranes
Lysis buffer constituent in western blots
Facilitates cell permeability for immunofluorescence staining
Tris-buffered saline (TBS) constituent for cell section preparations in Immunogold labelling for electron microscopy
